WEIRTON — The Independence Day holiday is over, but Weirton police are still responding to calls of fireworks being set off within the city limits.

“We are answering those calls,” Police Chief Charlie Kush explained, during Monday’s Weirton Council meeting, noting citations have been issued to residents as a result.

Under city code, fireworks being set off within city limits are restricted, including prohibitions against any incendiary device that makes an explosive sound.

City Attorney Vince Gurrera asked if instituting a loud noise ordinance would be of any benefit, but Kush said he feels existing law provides enough backing.

“The fireworks ordinance is pretty direct,” Kush said.

Penalties listed for violation of the code include fines of between $100 and $500, and the possibility of up to 30 days in jail.

Various sparklers and novelties, including explosive caps for toy pistols, “snakes” and “glow worms,” smoke devices, trick noisemakers, wire sparklers and other sparkling devices which do not propel themselves are permitted for public use.
