KALAMAZOO, MI -- The city of Kalamazoo will allow fireworks on another date this year for the first time, after the Kalamazoo City Commission approved rules to allow them on Juneteenth.

In July 2021, the city commission approved an ordinance to allow fireworks on the annual Juneteenth holiday, on June 19.

The city asks anyone planning to use fireworks to celebrate this summer to be safe and courteous. State and local laws only permit fireworks to be used during specific dates and times, the city said.

Fireworks are not allowed in city parks or on school grounds, so city officials ask residents to please only use them on private property. Using fireworks outside of these permitted times, on public property without approval, or while under the influence of intoxicants could result in a fine of up to $1,000.
