A Florida man severely damaged his hand after holding a taped bunch of sparklers for too long.
Wayne DeSmith, 36, was at his home on Kumquat Avenue in the town of Seminole celebrating the new year, according to a report by WFLA, a NBC news affiliated station serving the Tampa area.
At some point, DeSmith used electrical tape to bundle four boxes of sparklers together, then lit them but failed to throw his creation, WFLA reported.
A single sparkler can burn at 1,800 degrees, according the Chicago Tribune.
The sparklers collectively ignited as a large firecracker and severely damaged the soft tissue of DeSmith’s right hand, according WFLA.
He was taken to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg.
Neighbors and family members said he’s recovering.
