Fireworks in romance anime can be a cause for either celebration or sadness, sometimes both. Whatever the case, tears are guaranteed to flow.

Every genre of anime has tropes that tend to appear pretty often. In shonen action anime, one such trope would be the tournament arc, and in romance anime, it’s the firework scene. For one reason or another, the prospective lovebirds always find themselves enjoying a night sky illuminated with pretty colors.

These scenes are often beautifully animated, but they also create undeniably special moments. Sometimes, that can lead to a romantic confession that makes the audience tear up, but at other times, the viewers could tear up for a different reason entirely.

Wakana Gojo had little experience with friends or the outside world, but Marin Kitagawa comes literally crashing into his life to change that. Her vibrant enthusiasm and endless positivity let him experience many activities for the first time, such as a fireworks festival.

As the gorgeously animated fireworks fill the screen, Gojo becomes just as infatuated with Marin as he was with the fireworks a few seconds prior.

Fireworks often evoke strong emotions tied to romance, but this wasn’t the case for Your Name. Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu develop an unconventional body-swapping romance. One day, Mitsuha’s hometown of Itomori Village holds a fireworks festival at the same time a comet passes over the night sky.

The two characters watch the sky in awe from their respective locations, but audiences later find out that the comet decimated Itomori and killed Mitsuha. It makes their eventual reunion incredibly emotional.

Kaguya Shinomiya has never been to a fireworks festival, and she wanted nothing more than the chance to go to one with her crush, Miyuki Shirogane. This leads to her frantically running through a storm to try and find him before tragically giving up.

Miraculously, Miyuki finds her and takes the group on a taxi ride to a fireworks festival yet to start in a nearby town. The group watches the fireworks from the window of their taxi, but it’s not the fireworks that Kaguya becomes infatuated with. It was Miyuki himself.

Takagi clearly has feelings for Nishikata, as shown by her constant teasing of him. But, the young boy is oblivious to this. Thankfully, when he eventually catches on, he wastes no effort in trying to find her amid a busy festival.

They wanted to see the fireworks together, and time was running out. When Nishikata finally finds Takagi atop a tall staircase leading to a shrine, they hold hands and watch the night sky light up together.

In ReLIFE, the premise revolves around the idea that some adults are given the chance to relive their high school years once again in the present day. The fireworks festival sets the stage for some of Arata Kaizaki’s friends to confess to each other, and romance is in the air.

After the festival, Arata walks Chizuru Hishiro home and realizes that he loves her. But, he makes the decision to not say anything as he knows everyone will forget him when the ReLIFE project is over.

Tsukasa Mizugaki lands a job at an artificial intelligence company that creates Giftia. These human-like androids have short lifespans, and one, in particular, would become especially important to him. Tsukasa falls in love with the Giftia Isla, and the would-be lovebirds later find themselves at a carnival that holds special meaning for their friends.

It’s not long before Isla gets lost amid a large crowd, and when Tsukasa finds her, it’s in the midst of fireworks exploding all around them. It’s the perfect moment for a romantic confession and exactly what he did.

Your Lie in April foreshadows its terrible future. Musical prodigies Kousei Arima and Kaori Miyazono are set to perform together during a Gala concert. The night before this, their friend group sneaks into a pool area and sets off firecrackers to fulfill the wish of Kaori who exclaimed that she wanted to see fireworks earlier that day.

Nao Kashiwagi asks if Kaori wants to go down a musical career path, but Kaori’s sparkler dies before she exclaims, “I’m not thinking about the future just yet.”

A fireworks scene doesn’t need to be bombastic to invoke strong emotions. One Week Friends tells the heartwarming but sad story of Fujimiya Kaori and Yuki Hase. Kaori’s condition results in her losing her memory each week, meaning that Yuki must re-introduce himself each time.

In one specific episode, the unusual would-be couple goes to a beach with their friends. They set off some small fireworks, and Kaori lights her sparkler off Yuki’s. The meaningful progression brings a tear to the eye, especially since audiences know it won’t last long.

Through a series of unfortunate events, Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani still haven’t been able to get each other to understand how they feel about one another. As she watches fireworks from her school rooftop, Risa realizes that without Otani, she couldn’t think of fireworks as pretty.

Otani makes a surprise appearance, gives her a necklace, and it ends in both their first and second kisses. It was the moment all viewers were waiting for, and it was a joy to finally see it happen.

Sakura Yamauchi suffers from pancreatic disease, which means that her lifespan will be cut dramatically short. She’s consistently in and out of hospitals, but one day, as Haruki Shiga visits her, she decides to sneak out and bring him with her to watch some fireworks.

It’s a serene moment that's made even more poignant when they share a hug and promise to go to the beach when she gets discharged. Unfortunately, that never happened.
